REVOLUTION CHAIR

Purpose:   The competition’s target is precisely the in-depth analysis of these terms such cornerstone of social rebirth inside urban frame, carrying on multiple needs: not only an architectural item that upgrades socially unattractive places but a device that get together the meeting opportunity, also between different generation, and the self-building by citizen, without industrial means, work together under the temperate sun of June.

Concept of the project:  The concept of the REVOLUTION CHAIR is the revolution itself, that is the possibility to rotate the system in order to get different way of sitting every time you wish, on the basis of needs, age and uses. In the same time it’s possible to return at the original configuration. Anyway the inspiration of the REVOLUTION CHAIR it’s not only a mechanical concept but stand for the will of realize a quite instinctive sense of sociability, and the form itself it’s the material translation.

Let’s think these images: the famous and numerous cupolas of Yaroslavl churches defining the sinuous skyline; and two hands joined together crossing the fingers in order to symbolize union and protection. The fusion of those images in the final design has created such a living organism, that considering needs and seasons, is an architectural complement in the historical context and also a urban modern furniture, comfortable and flexible to use.

REVOLUTION CHAIR scheme

Technical description: The constructive system is made by three parts: woody structure (the moving one), steel base (that contains the mechanical parts) and platform. The Revolution Chair is made only with wood and steel and its modular structure (each seat module is 67 cm large) makes the building process easier and meanwhile allows to keep the costs under control: we couldn’t know how much costs the materials we need to build a complete pavilion, then we’ve thought to compose a modular structure in order to allows the builders to decide themselves how much to spend about it.

The estimated cost of the project:  The estimated cost with Italian medium prices every module will cost more or less 300,00 USD (considering only unrefined materials)

REVOLUTION CHAIR /2

«It’s not possible to live the city if the city itself doesn’t allow it this is to say, city gives no spaces. The place is where we rest, it’s pause, it’s similar to silence in music, and
there is no music without silence.

Post-metropolitan land ignore silence,
doesn’t allow to rest and gather together to live».

Massimo Cacciari
in Aldo Bonomi, “La città infinita”

REVOLUTION CHAIR details

THE REVOLUTION CHAIR

Therefore it is the “place to rest” the principal target and, by the way, the revaluation of those urban spaces that can offer it. But which are the qualities a “place to rest” should have? Probably most of people would imagine a lonely bench in the middle of a park, or the shadow of some fowered trees at the border of the main square, or a friend’s bar table, where sitting together and say hello to other consumers. So an open space, a closed one, separate by nature things or persons, recognizable and maybe comfortable?
All these details do every space a possible personal “place to rest”, according different way of thinking, and different value of the quality of life in urban context. Every city has, historically, a system of places, spaces and paths to walk or cycle, dedicated to sport or social activities or games, relax and rest zones. It’s exactly the gathering and the social attitude, through out multiple activities that allows to stop time and ignore the common metropolitan places (like highways, car, skyscrapers, industries) and rediscover human-like- places.

The competition’s target is precisely the in-depth analysis of these terms such cornerstone of social rebirth inside urban frame, carrying on multiple needs: not only an architectural item that upgrades socially unattractive places but a device that brings together the meeting opportunity, also between different generation, and the self-building by citizen, without industrial means, work together under the temperate sun of june.

REVOLUTION CHAIR construction

The concept of the REVOLUTION CHAIR is the revolution itself, that is the possibility to rotate the system in order to get different way of sitting every time you wish, on the basis of needs, age and uses.

Both were strong ideas for us, the first one suggested by the well-established identity of the place, decisively contaminated by the powerful presence and the sweet design of its towers; the second one taken like ideal and technological target, because it is a immediate and authentic representation of union, state of mind, sociability, comfort and protection.

The fusion of those images in the final design has created such a living organism, that considering needs and seasons, is an architectural complement in the historical context and also a urban modern furniture, comfortable and fexible to use. Some social benefits deriving from the installation of a similar device, like a symbol of “a place to rest”, will be the start of new socializing processes and interaction between younger and elder generations. Children will use 100% of the structure potential – for instance like a big toy, or a house to meet each other… — adults will take rest from the desired sitting position, older people and people with handicap will find pleasant shadow during summertime and shelter in cold winter days.

TECNOLOGY

The constructive system is made by three parts: woody structure (the moving one), steel base (that contains the mechanical parts) and platform.

THE WOODY STRUCTURE – it’s done by slices of pine wood in order to compose a module (67 cm long) that can be replicated every time you wish. The woody structure is divided into two parts having independent movement: vertical structure and seat. For assembly the REVOLUTION CHAIR are necessary five components, all made with pine 3,5 cm thick slices. In the project

philosophy we’ve tried to avoid material waste, without giving up the aesthetic of the form. This because we think that a socially useful product should be also a symbol of improved awareness towards nature and environment that people live and share.

Unrefined material measures:

  • –  40 x 200 x 3,5 *cm (vertical component)
  • –  20 x 200 x 3,5 * cm (bigger covering component)
  • –  20 x 150 x 3,5 * cm (smaller covering component)
  • –  35 x 70 x 3,5 * cm (seat component)
  • –  30 x 34 x 3,5 * cm (base component)
    * thick measure is to consider unrefined (3,5 cm) because with the planing will lose 2-3 mm each side: final measure should be 3 cm.

These components need some other minimal work:
– the vertical component has two holes, with different diameters: in the smaller one will pass the rotation pivot of the entire structure, while in the bigger hole will stand a steel ring (that derives from a cylinder tubular) in order to preserve wood during rotation;
– the two covering components have three small holes where will pass three threading rods in order to fix all the slices to the vertical structure;
– seat component has a hole like a cross in order to move only the seat without moving the entire structure; – base component has a hole too, that coincides with the smaller hole in the vertical structure.

THE STEEL BASE – It’s made by simple rectangular tubular (measures of section: 26x15cm, 67 long). In the extreme sides are fixed two steel shaped plates. These plates cover both the extremity and fix the base to the structure above. The tubular contains a winch that grants the controlled rotation: from the steel base sticks out an hexagonal rod that can be moved with an articulated stick (like those of manual rolling shutter).

PLATFORM – It’s the fixing component of the entire structure and grants statical stability. It’s made simply by T profile steel rods fixed with screws to the steel bases both sides. Each module has two rods, above those there is wood slices pavement.

Hi , I’am Sergio and I’ve projected this chair with my friend Marco. I respect all opinion but I suspect that some of those comment are writed by an another. uncorrect competitor…..the request of this competition is not to built a monument , is not for eternity. With our project we would like to read the ancient spirit of Yaroslavl and translate it in an object for a new sociality and not solve all the problem of the world. Excuse my bad english, best regards, Sergio

    Hi everybody,
this project is totally original, and if anybody isn’t agree, please write directly the name of your imaginary italian chair.

In any way, the design isn’t born only from a form (churches cupolas) but from the spirit of the form. Every form carries on its own spirit, cubes spheres, pyramid, but also surfaces, lines and simple points have their own.
Secondly, like an italian philosopher said once: «Time is the first architecture the man has made to live». This is to say that every object done by man can’t exist forever because Time and Men are depending one to the other, reciprocally.

No, I cannot agree, this chair will be not vandal’s prouve, hard for changes by kids, olders and handicaps. It means, this project is against the idea of the social festival!!! From the other hand, this chair Can be very dangerous for kids (movable, sharp elements). I suggest to install it at the museum or private garden…

the project is POOR, but this is not our italian style; Idon’t know who’s Marco & Sergio, but they are not representative peoples for my country!!!!!!

  17. Posted on 13.05.2013 by Name

You that are commenting in a mean way, i’m talking to you. Do you need to write such a thing to make people pay attention to your project? Maybe cause you’ve realized that your project and your design have no appeal, they are poor, meaningless, superficial and without a strong concept behind it.
Take it easy man, live and let live!
Last but not least, i suggest you to study a bit of italian design.

    Kind regards

I think that The project is very poor, for me it’ s only a sketch that look fine to the eye. I also think that the project is not functional in any way.
