THE HEDGEHOGS PAVILION

Purpose: Architectural object

THE HEDGEHOGS PAVILION /2

Concept of the project:  Inspiration for project “THE HEDGEHOG`S PAVILLION” we found in Serbian build heritage, precisely in outbuilding (Serbian, vajat) of rural household, in which newlyweds together first started their life. What’s interesting about “vajat” is that the dimension of whole building is dimension of double bed size, and whole “home” is on construction lifted from the ground on some kind of skies, allowing newlyweds to move their home wherever they like. In such a way, they will have privacy from their relatives.

THE HEDGEHOGS PAVILION /3

The main idea for the pavilion in Yaroslavi is to create space for escape from everyday urban life in nature with “Moving hedge”

COOKIN ́ GARDEN

Purpose: “food” is thought as an element that does social connection. The goal is to successfully enrich the intercultural characteristic of the neighbourhood of central Yaroslavl.

COOKIN ́ GARDEN /2

Concept of the project:  The proposal consists on an “urban kitchen developed for external spaces of the city”. This kitchen is expected to act as a landmark and as a common ground for people. Recipes coming from this intercultural community will be on it. In addition, cooking lessons of local chefs (diverse nationalities) are predicted to happen every Sunday of the summer months (June, July and August). On the one hand, these actions intend to estimate the community of Yaroslavl and on the other hand, it can open the kitchen to the general public.

This approach was chosen as useful for dealing with the intercultural task. The research verified that the kitchen was a very vibrant use in other location previously tested.

COOKIN ́ GARDEN /3

Technical description: 1. Its structure can be disposed in any flat area. The structure of the display is carried out by concrete tubes of 50 cm diameter or circular steel structure full-filled with bricks, earth and plants. It is strong enough to carry a perpendicular wooden grid structure (linked with «L» shaped metal pieces) and as well the wood revetment. All information can be seen in the picture (). They are as well detailed in the plans.

2. It can be easily mounted with the DIY System. With the correct pieces shape any adult can build it. Another suggestion may be to do it with the help of DIY Store.

3. A wood waterproof may be done because of the fact that it will be disposed in one open space.

4. Regarding safety parameters, the kitchen does not have tools such as knives, forks and spoons, and it does not have any electronic device on it. Deserves attention, the fact that the «street kitchen» as a public space to share culture and recipes. It can be used as picnic area, or a place to meet people to sit and relax. During the workshops, the project staff is responsible to bring own tools and equipment to cook.

The estimated cost of the project: 2.900 $

PARKing Curves / Tengiz Alaverdashvili / Georgia, Tbilisi  / Архитектурный объект / Лэнд-Арт объект

PARKing Curves

Purpose:   Park bench

PARKing Curves /2

Concept of the project:

The task is to make existing park more attractive and interesting for “parking”. First of all it has to be easier to access. At the moment the boulevard is isolated from surrounding space and can be accessed only from distant ends of the park.

Designed object is placed in front of the Center of Belarusian culture (House-Museum of Maxim Bogdanovich). This is a central part of the park and it is a good place for making a connection between Tchaikovsky street and the alley. Also there are some good views from this place – the Center of Belarusian culture, House of Ariadna, the obelisk, boulevard and the park itself.

PARKing Curves /3

As the park isn’t a street only for walking through, it has to have some places for people to “park”. These “parking” places should be attractive for families, youth, different social and age groups.

Designed object is a park bench named “PARKing curves”. This is a place for gathering, connecting with each other, having fun, or just sitting, having a rest and enjoying park views. Also it serves as a connection between city and the park. The bench has a curved outline which goes around the existing trees, creating many “parking” places with different views. Some parts of the curves are more open to the street and boulevard views and some are cozier.

PARKing Curves /4

The inner part of the “PARKing curves” is filled with soil. In the centers of the curves where are the existing trees the ground level is left unchanged, so some nice landscape curves are created.

The concept of the design was to make it very flexible. Thus it has a certain shape as shown in the proposal it can be changed according to the place, budget, etc. The outline of the “PARKing curves” goes around existing trees. It can be split into several small objects, or unite into bigger ones. This flexibility of the design makes possible to adjust it to any place of the park.

This concept can be used not only for a single installation. These types of “PARKing curves“ can be placed in different parts of the park, or they can form groups and be placed side by side.

Making connections between the alley and the streets and creating nice places for “parking” will give the park a new life and make it more attractive and inviting for people.

PARKing Curves /5

Technical description:

The basic materials are concrete, steel T beams, metal sheets and timber. Dimensions are 0.4mX18.0mX18.0m. Structural steel elements will be prefabricated and mounted on site. The design is very flexible, so dimensions and forms can be changed on site according to situation.

To make the construction of the object easier 1mX1m grid should be made on site (as show on plan drawing) with wires or ropes.

Most of the works will be made on site and it will be amazing experience for inhabitants of Yaroslavl watching step by step construction of “PARKing curves”.

PARKing Curves /6

The estimated cost of the project:  Cost depends on size of the object and material quality and is approximately 2500-7000$

The element can be positioned at various points of the avenue Tchaikovsky.

The best position could be the beginning of the pedestrian path, framing the obelisk in the center of the park.

In the frame is shaped a bear, the symbol of the city of Yaroslavl.

The presence of the bear silhouette immediately identifies the photos that will be taken, creating a sort of socially-conscious brand for the city.

The frame is also a bench blanket. Inside, people can sit or lie down comfortably.

Its special shape makes it attractive, especially for children, who can unleash their imagination, play with the shape of the bear, etc.

Dream of Nutcracker / Marija Cvejić, Sladjana Cvejić / Belgrade, Serbia / Лэнд-Арт объект

Dream of Nutcracker

Purpose:   Multifunctional, recreation, education, culture.

Concept of the project:

Basically, concept is artificial design set as result of social challenge for providing dynamic, enjoyable, multifunctional and overall safe environment for everyone where everything seems possible. Originally the idea started with desire for unveiling vivid, colorful almost surreal space where all possibilities intersect while, at the same time, drawing nature into playful ambient of childlike dream.

Pleasant afternoon for family to spend would require park area that provides more than just passive walk and proposed site seems perfect for design that offers much more. Fluently shaped path followed by benches, leads visitors through shaded green area, surrounded with spaces for active recreation and safe spaces for children, all the way to the mini- square completely open and oriented towards objects of heritage with monument as central element. Specific extension of this artificially shaped environment is auditorium, partly hidden and aimed for lectures, concerts and multimedia presentations. That way space is additionally activated for public events, but spatially it’s 3- dimensionally double challenged as artificial hill and space for children to play and for winter activities.

Dream of Nutcracker /2

Technical description:  Project covers entire surface of the proposed location. Represents both spatially and functionally activated area covered by materials such as concrete and wood with dominant green areas. The intention was to keep as much trees as possible, while creating artificial landscape solution that would provide users with possibility of choice during day, night and different periods of the year. Spaces would temporarily be activated with installation of recycled PVC balloons, mainly for children. Redwood or pine would be used for skating ramps without additional construction, landed directly on sand.

The estimated cost of the project:  With having covered entire site costs highly exceeded cost proposal. Due to not having access to all material’s prices in Russia final price is not presented.

Dream of Nutcracker /3

Dream of Nutcracker

Everything starts with a dream. The dream. Dream of perfection.

Perfect perception of things that surround us starts with an idea of space that brings all the fun, amusement, vividness, serenity and joy together and translates them into dynamic sketch that spatially shapes the dream into dreamlike reality for children and people alike.

Dream of Nutcracker /4

Having premise for an artificial design that provides dynamic, enjoyable, multifunctional and overall safe environment for everyone where everything seems possible upgrades the efforts for creating ambient that brings certain amount of playful magic while balancing between strong heritage and futuristic human scaled design. Even though landscaping that is monumental in scale represents difficult environment socially, creating public realm with multiple functionalities opens entirely new way of perception of how built environment affects quality of people’s lives.

This perfect site opens possibilities for design imagined as:

  •   Visually created for people to not be aware of how big it is,
  •   Product that is extracting the most of available space,
  •   3- dimensionally activated surface to create spaces pleasant for different groups of users,
  •   Precise respond to pedestrians as result of detecting motion and integrating it into design.

Dream of Nutcracker 5

Every element / bench, path, grass field, fountain pool with monument/ is part of greater puzzle, and as such serves the function without detracting from the cohesiveness of the wider picture. Basic guidelines such as mobility and flexibility play significant role in meeting requested standards in terms of endurance and quality of design.
Composition as conceptual response to the brief visually and spatially opens towards traditional elements in the north. But, on the other side, from centrally positioned composition around monument paths lead to functionally shaped niches designed as pockets pleasant for people to gather and children to play in.
Permanent installations such as artificial hill or skating ramp with sufficient inclination for both winter and summer activities, water mirror surrounding monument, benches that curved follow the path, multimedia – performance auditorium make dynamic picture that can be enriched with temporary installations in practically all parts of the park. Balloons made of recycled PVC could encolor the space made and visually shaped from concrete, wood and all around green environment.

REVOLUTION CHAIR

Purpose:   The competition’s target is precisely the in-depth analysis of these terms such cornerstone of social rebirth inside urban frame, carrying on multiple needs: not only an architectural item that upgrades socially unattractive places but a device that get together the meeting opportunity, also between different generation, and the self-building by citizen, without industrial means, work together under the temperate sun of June.

Concept of the project:  The concept of the REVOLUTION CHAIR is the revolution itself, that is the possibility to rotate the system in order to get different way of sitting every time you wish, on the basis of needs, age and uses. In the same time it’s possible to return at the original configuration. Anyway the inspiration of the REVOLUTION CHAIR it’s not only a mechanical concept but stand for the will of realize a quite instinctive sense of sociability, and the form itself it’s the material translation.

Let’s think these images: the famous and numerous cupolas of Yaroslavl churches defining the sinuous skyline; and two hands joined together crossing the fingers in order to symbolize union and protection. The fusion of those images in the final design has created such a living organism, that considering needs and seasons, is an architectural complement in the historical context and also a urban modern furniture, comfortable and flexible to use.

REVOLUTION CHAIR scheme

Technical description: The constructive system is made by three parts: woody structure (the moving one), steel base (that contains the mechanical parts) and platform. The Revolution Chair is made only with wood and steel and its modular structure (each seat module is 67 cm large) makes the building process easier and meanwhile allows to keep the costs under control: we couldn’t know how much costs the materials we need to build a complete pavilion, then we’ve thought to compose a modular structure in order to allows the builders to decide themselves how much to spend about it.

The estimated cost of the project:  The estimated cost with Italian medium prices every module will cost more or less 300,00 USD (considering only unrefined materials)

REVOLUTION CHAIR /2

«It’s not possible to live the city if the city itself doesn’t allow it this is to say, city gives no spaces. The place is where we rest, it’s pause, it’s similar to silence in music, and
there is no music without silence.

Post-metropolitan land ignore silence,
doesn’t allow to rest and gather together to live».

Massimo Cacciari
in Aldo Bonomi, “La città infinita”

REVOLUTION CHAIR details

THE REVOLUTION CHAIR

Therefore it is the “place to rest” the principal target and, by the way, the revaluation of those urban spaces that can offer it. But which are the qualities a “place to rest” should have? Probably most of people would imagine a lonely bench in the middle of a park, or the shadow of some fowered trees at the border of the main square, or a friend’s bar table, where sitting together and say hello to other consumers. So an open space, a closed one, separate by nature things or persons, recognizable and maybe comfortable?
All these details do every space a possible personal “place to rest”, according different way of thinking, and different value of the quality of life in urban context. Every city has, historically, a system of places, spaces and paths to walk or cycle, dedicated to sport or social activities or games, relax and rest zones. It’s exactly the gathering and the social attitude, through out multiple activities that allows to stop time and ignore the common metropolitan places (like highways, car, skyscrapers, industries) and rediscover human-like- places.

The competition’s target is precisely the in-depth analysis of these terms such cornerstone of social rebirth inside urban frame, carrying on multiple needs: not only an architectural item that upgrades socially unattractive places but a device that brings together the meeting opportunity, also between different generation, and the self-building by citizen, without industrial means, work together under the temperate sun of june.

REVOLUTION CHAIR construction

The concept of the REVOLUTION CHAIR is the revolution itself, that is the possibility to rotate the system in order to get different way of sitting every time you wish, on the basis of needs, age and uses.

Both were strong ideas for us, the first one suggested by the well-established identity of the place, decisively contaminated by the powerful presence and the sweet design of its towers; the second one taken like ideal and technological target, because it is a immediate and authentic representation of union, state of mind, sociability, comfort and protection.

The fusion of those images in the final design has created such a living organism, that considering needs and seasons, is an architectural complement in the historical context and also a urban modern furniture, comfortable and fexible to use. Some social benefits deriving from the installation of a similar device, like a symbol of “a place to rest”, will be the start of new socializing processes and interaction between younger and elder generations. Children will use 100% of the structure potential – for instance like a big toy, or a house to meet each other… — adults will take rest from the desired sitting position, older people and people with handicap will find pleasant shadow during summertime and shelter in cold winter days.

REVOLUTION CHAIR elements

TECNOLOGY

The constructive system is made by three parts: woody structure (the moving one), steel base (that contains the mechanical parts) and platform.

THE WOODY STRUCTURE – it’s done by slices of pine wood in order to compose a module (67 cm long) that can be replicated every time you wish. The woody structure is divided into two parts having independent movement: vertical structure and seat. For assembly the REVOLUTION CHAIR are necessary five components, all made with pine 3,5 cm thick slices. In the project

philosophy we’ve tried to avoid material waste, without giving up the aesthetic of the form. This because we think that a socially useful product should be also a symbol of improved awareness towards nature and environment that people live and share.

Unrefined material measures:

  • –  40 x 200 x 3,5 *cm (vertical component)
  • –  20 x 200 x 3,5 * cm (bigger covering component)
  • –  20 x 150 x 3,5 * cm (smaller covering component)
  • –  35 x 70 x 3,5 * cm (seat component)
  • –  30 x 34 x 3,5 * cm (base component)
    * thick measure is to consider unrefined (3,5 cm) because with the planing will lose 2-3 mm each side: final measure should be 3 cm.

REVOLUTION CHAIR — night view

These components need some other minimal work:
– the vertical component has two holes, with different diameters: in the smaller one will pass the rotation pivot of the entire structure, while in the bigger hole will stand a steel ring (that derives from a cylinder tubular) in order to preserve wood during rotation;
– the two covering components have three small holes where will pass three threading rods in order to fix all the slices to the vertical structure;
– seat component has a hole like a cross in order to move only the seat without moving the entire structure; – base component has a hole too, that coincides with the smaller hole in the vertical structure.

THE STEEL BASE – It’s made by simple rectangular tubular (measures of section: 26x15cm, 67 long). In the extreme sides are fixed two steel shaped plates. These plates cover both the extremity and fix the base to the structure above. The tubular contains a winch that grants the controlled rotation: from the steel base sticks out an hexagonal rod that can be moved with an articulated stick (like those of manual rolling shutter).

PLATFORM – It’s the fixing component of the entire structure and grants statical stability. It’s made simply by T profile steel rods fixed with screws to the steel bases both sides. Each module has two rods, above those there is wood slices pavement.

STACK IT

Purpose:   PLACE TO MEET, SIT, READ

Stack It

Concept of the project:

Our proposal for the social revolution festival is a pavilion with more than one function.

Since education plays a big role in the city of Yaroslavl, we propose to generate a public, open library. A place to meet, rest and read. The pavilion consists of the major walls, which are the main structure and emphasize the way through the park.

Stack it structure

In these wallst he books can be found. A certain amount of them will be given by the municipality, others can be left and exchanged by visitors of the festival.

The pavilion becomes an interactive sculpture and provides a base for communication. The platforms along these walls can be used for gathering together. With their difference in height, a big variety in functionality is given. It can be a place to rest, read, chat or even play some music together. Platforms in- and outside differ in privacy and so it is free to the visitors to use them and bring them to life.

Stack it /2

Technical description:  The construction is easy to assemble and the material, used euro pallets, is cheap and, most important, recycled. The pallets could be lent by local companies as an advertisement for the time of the fesival. After the event the pallets still can be used, the waste of material is zero.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution / Karolina Tarkowska, Paweł Kochański / Poland, Szczecin / Архитектурный объект

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution

Purpose:   Our idea was to create an ecological object from recycled materials and a green space surrounding it, which would encourage people to rediscover social life. We wanted to use simple and easy accessible resources. That is why we chose old cargo containers as our main structure and earth soil for creation of the landscape.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /2

Concept of the project: Our intervention in the park was supposed to make it more attractive, but at the same time not to destroy its general

composition. We want to keep the main axis of Tchaikovsky Boulevard as the main objective of the park. That is why we decided to dig our objects into the ground and create at the same time interesting and much safer landscape. We hope that various activities that we propose will bring life to social relations of Yaroslavl’s inhabitants.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /3

This project is a proposal – how to reuse cargo containers. There could be built just one pavilion, containing all of the functions, but we wanted also to create a proposal of bigger composition – three independent, but functionally related pavilions, connected by curving path. As it was mentioned before, we did not want to interrupt the main axis of boulevard. That is why our path is somehow dancing and writhing around it, but never dominating. We also want to keep and preserve al of the beautiful trees surrounding boulevard- paths and pavilions are always situated between them!

Main elements of the project are: Recycled pavilions, covering them artificial hills, digged in those hills social nests.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /4

Technical description:  Following the ecological objectives we would like to propose to recycle old cargo containers and use them as a main structure of the pavilion. We chose medium size containers with dimensions 12,20m x 2,40m x 2,60m. Because main structure (container) is prefabricated, everything that is needed to be done is to place it in the right spot. All further actions, such us covering it with earth and finishing is so simple, that it could be done by local people. Interior walls are covered by simple wooden MDF plates, which are cheap but practical. They would also perfectly suit its industrial style. Containers made of steel are also rather resistible to vandalism – there is not really much what one can destroy and materials are durable. Moreover pavilion could be locked during the night.

The pavilion may hold different cultural functions, such as small library, mediatheque or café. Library is supposed to be a local platform for book exchange – so called book- crossing, a mediatheque –platform for multimedia exchange equipped with wi-fi connection. It might be a place where people could exchange their old books or download e-books and audiobooks. Everything might be painted regarding the wishes and moods of inhabitants. It may be a perfect place for artistic expression.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /5

Pavilion itself is not the only part of the project designed

with purpose to spend time in it. As it was mentioned before, all pavilions are dig in the ground, or more specifically covered with earth. This allows creating a very interesting surrounding landscape – artificial hills, suitable to relax and to do sports. It is also a great place for children to play, especially in winter, when it might be used for sliding. Soil covering the metal container creates also natural layer of insulation for pavilion.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution / 6

In the artificial hills we would like to propose dig-in seats, which also would be created buy their users- Yaroslavl’s inhabitants. They could give them whichever shape they want. It is also an important moment of participation in construction. Those seats are meant to be a sitting nests for the users of pavilion – to read books, use multimedia or drink coffee. Or just to rest, relax, and have fun with friends. Holes could be bigger, for social integration, or smaller, for individual use. After shaping them we propose to cover them with concrete finishing to prevent them from collapsing.

Yaroslavl — Recycling Revolution /7

The estimated cost of the project: Estimated cost of one pavilion with covering hill and social nests is about 2.900 $
